Sue's Saturday Suggestions #23

Interesting Books

(Descriptions from Goodreads)

John Dies at the End by David Wong, review at Travels Through Iest

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why? You just have to trust me.

The important thing is this: The drug is called Soy Sauce and it gives users a window into another dimension. John and I never had the chance to say no. You still do. I'm sorry to have involved you in this, I really am. But as you read about these terrible events and the very dark epoch the world is about to enter as a result, it is crucial you keep one thing in mind: None of this was my fault.

The Lazarus Machine by Paul Crilley, review at Starmetal Oak Reviews

An alternate 1895... a world where Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace perfected the Difference engine. Where steam and tesla-powered computers are everywhere. Where automatons powered by human souls venture out into the sprawling London streets. Where the Ministry, a secretive government agency, seeks to control everything in the name of the Queen.

It is in this claustrophobic, paranoid city that seventeen-year-old Sebastian Tweed and his conman father struggle to eke out a living.

But all is not well...

A murderous, masked gang has moved into London, spreading terror through the criminal ranks as they take over the underworld. As the gang carves up more and more of the city, a single name comes to be uttered in fearful whispers.

Professor Moriarty.

When Tweed’s father is kidnapped by Moriarty, he is forced to team up with information broker Octavia Nightingale to track him down. But he soon realizes that his father’s disappearance is just a tiny piece of a political conspiracy that could destroy the British Empire and plunge the world into a horrific war.

Jan Delima

This is a little more personal than many of my other suggestions, but I am sure that you will forgive me for that! :)

Jan is a friend of mine, who I met through my wonderful book group, and she is also an author. She has been working on her latest book for the last year or so and has now got a publication date in 2013. I will be helping her to promote her Urban Fantasy title, but I thought you might like to get to know her a little, so here is her latest blog post.

Triumph Over Tragedy

Sarah over at Bookworm Blues is editing this anthology. All proceeds go the Red Cross and the title is dedicated to the survivors of Hurricane Sandy.

Sarah writes about the project at SF Signal

A Game of Thrones News

WinterIsComing.net is a great resource for anyone obsessed with HBO’s A Game of Thrones adaptation.

They report that the DVD and BluRay sets for Season Two will be released on February 19th, which makes them a perfect late Valentine’s present . . . was that a subtle enough hint for my husband, I wonder? :D
